Joan grew up in the midst of tobacco farms and the lush woods of the Farmington River Valley of Northern Connecticut. A childhood spent exploring the wonders of nature instilled an appreciation and respect for all things nature has to offer. Despite her love of wildlife and wilderness, Levitt pursued her higher education in New York City. She holds a BA from Hunter College, studying under painter, Bob Swain and master draftsman, Anthony Panzera. She earned an MFA from Lehman College, studying under painter and master printmaker Arun Bose.  She taught in the NYC public school system for 10 years, thoroughly enjoying the creativity, spontaneity and innocence of her students. Reflected in her work you will see a playfulness and sense of wonder.

Since 1988 Joan has been producing etchings in hopes of sharing her vision with others. She works from her home studio in the Hudson River Valley. Inspired by the surrounding woodlands, neighboring farms and views from her husband’s little Cessna, Levitt creates and prints original etchings from start to finish.
